FIFTY-SEVEN
WHEN JEFF WAS born, I was stupefied over the depth of my love for him; awestruck by the fierceness of its intensity. When I became pregnant with Matt, I couldnât imagine how I could ever bisect such profound feelings and divvy out portions to two children. I found I didnât have to. It didnât work that way. There was as much passion for Matt as there had ever been for Jeff.

Yet it must be said, those night feedings were the very times I liked best. In the dark of night, when there was nothing else bidding for my attention, I could concentrate all of me on whichever of my three babies I was holding. With only the two of us locked together in our rocking chair capsule, it was complete serenity.
Many years later someone told me about La Leche League. I couldnât believe it. How ridiculous was that! Like you had to take out membership in a club in order to nurse your baby? If theyâd asked me, I would have dropped that Frenchy business and renamed it just what it was ⦠âTits for Tots!â
